DIY Tips – How to Replace Windshield Wipers

Windshield Wipers

Although the wiper blades of a windshield are crucial, we often choose to ignore their importance. The wiper blades allow the driver a clear vision during rain and snowfall. Without them, your car is more prone to accidents. Faulty wipers can be ineffective and can also open the possibility of creating visual hindrances or even damaging the windshield.

Any cracking, bending, or splitting of the wiper blade rubber is a major safety hazard and therefore car wiper blade replacement on time is necessary. Mentioned below are a few tips on how to replace the windshield wipers all by yourself.

Take the measurement of the wipers

Before taking off the wiper assembly, read the manual of your car to know the exact size of the wipers. It is necessary because the newer car models, as opposed to the older cars, use different-sized wipers. Buying an incompatible-sized wiper will not provide an optimum solution to your issue. Using a rope or a tape to measure them is another way to go, but make sure to measure both of them as the size of the driver’s side wiper and the passenger’s side wiper are different in size.

Remove the old wiper

First, lift the wipers and carefully pull them away from the windshield. You will find a small tab on the underside of the wiper where it meets the wiper arm. Depress the tab and slide the wiper blade off the arm by pulling it downwards. The wipers should easily detach from the windshield. If it gets stuck, do not apply excessive force as it might break. Seek professional help in such cases.

Attach the new wiper blades

Attaching the new wiper blades can be a little tricky. Make sure not to put too much pressure on the wiper blades or they might bend or even break. Slowly install the wiper blade onto the arm and you will hear a clicking sound when the wiper fits on to the wiper arm. Once it is done, simply lower the arm and slowly put it back on the windshield. Repeat the same on the other wiper blade.
